The aim of our research is to find key genes and their regulatory networks, which significantly shape the unique and diverse biology of marine microalgae (phytoplankton), These data will help to improve Our understanding about how these globally important organisms have evolved and are adapted to specific marine habitats, This fundamental knowledge about microbes from the upper ocean will help to interpret future responses to global change.
Our group uses genomic tools for selected phytoplankton species (e,g, genome sequencing and microarrays) and natural assemblages from the global upper Ocean (e.g. metatranscriptomics) to identify their gene Composition and expression, This leads to the identification of genes that shape their phenotype and are therefore responsible for their unique biology and adaptation to different environmental conditions, These studies are followed up by functional analysis (e.g. genome transformations and chromatin immunoprecipitation), which test experimentally the predicted gene function and how these genes are regulated,
